29 days to Euro 2012: David Villa and Spain hit Russia for four

In their opening game of Euro 2008, the Valencia hitman came up trumps by bagging himself a hat-trick.

HE’S FACING A race against time to be fit for Euro 2012, but four years ago David Villa was the man to set Spain on their way to glory.

Luis Aragones’ side was littered with stars but still hadn’t shaken off that old title of ‘perennial underachievers’ when they arrived in Austria to face Russia on June 10.

However, in a man of the match performance, the Valencia striker scored three and could’ve had a couple more in a 4-1 win over the Guus Hiddink-managed team.

He finished the tournament as topscorer as Spain won their first European Championship since 1964.
