Gone, but not forgotten.

Ray Brady

FORMER IRELAND INTERNATIONAL Ray Brady passed away at the age of 79 in November. The Dubliner, the elder brother of fellow international and RTÉ pundit Liam, won six caps for Ireland between 1963 and 1964.

Brazil’s 1970 World Cup-winning captain was widely regarded as one of the finest defenders of his time. Carlos Alberto was most fondly remembered for scoring the stunning fourth goal in Brazil’s 4-1 final win over Italy at Mexico 1970. He passed away aged 72 in October.

Michael ‘Milo’ Corcoran

Corcoran served as FAI President from 2001 to 2005 and also served five years as vice-president of the association. He was a staunch supporter of the League of Ireland and was a regular at his beloved Waterford United, where he served a variety of roles including club chairman, and was the club’s representative on the League Committee in the 1980s and 1990s.

Corcoran passed away following an illness in August.

Liam Tuohy

Described by the Football Association of Ireland as ‘one of the greatest football people this country has produced’, Liam Tuohy died at the age of 83 in August. The Dubliner first made his mark as a member of Shamrock Rovers’ superb teams of the 1950s and 1960s, with whom he won three four titles and an incredible eight FAI Cups.

Eamonn Dolan

The former Irish underage international and twin brother of well-known domestic football figure Pat, lost his battle with cancer in June. He was 48.

A Reading hero because of his incredible work with the club’s youth teams, Dolan had the north stand at the Madejski Stadium named after him shortly after his passing.

Patrick Ekeng

The Cameroon international died after collapsing on the pitch during a match with his Romanian side Dinamo Bucharest in May. He was just 26.

Johan Cruyff

Dutch legend, and one of the game’s all-time greats, lost his battle with lung cancer in March. Capped 48 times, Cruyff — who won the Ballon d’Or on three occasions — was synonymous with the number 14 shirt and won three European Cups with Ajax. He was 68.

Trifon Ivanov

Former Bulgaria international Trifon Ivanov, one of the stars of USA ’94, passed away in February at the age of 50.

Mark Farren

Derry City legend Mark Farren lost his brave battle with a brain tumour in February. The 33-year-old was the club’s all-time top goalscorer.

Steve Gohouri

The former Wigan defender passed away suddenly in January. The Ivory Coast international, who played in the top flight in England, Switzerland and Germany, was 34.
