GOOD EVENING

The 5 at 5 5 minutes, 5 stories, 5 o’clock…

EVERY WEEKDAY EVENING, TheJournal.ie brings you the five stories you need to know before you head out the door.

1. #SHELL: There have been calls today for an inquiry into allegations by a company that it distributed alcohol to gardaí who were working on behalf of Shell in Mayo. A spokesperson for Shell to Sea said the allegations raise serious concerns about the policing in the area.

2. #STRIKE: Pilots at Aer Arann are to go on strike next week after they voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action over a disagreement on rosters and pay. Trade unions say management have refused to end a pay freeze which has been in place for five years.

3. #GREEN ENERGY: Retail giant IKEA is to power its Irish stores by a new wind farm in Leitrim, it announced today. The new facility has already begun and is slated to be completed next year.

4. #NETHERLANDS: Dutch prince Johan Friso has died, eighteen months after he was seriously injured by an avalanche while skiing at a resort in Austria. The 44-year-old prince had been unconscious since the accident which left him buried under snow for more than 15 minutes.

5. #EYES TO THE SKY: The skies over Ireland will be lit up this evening as the powerful Perseid meteor shower passes overhead. The shower, which can be seen once a year and is visible to the naked eye, is caused by debris from a passing comet.
