7 reasons Sevens is the best way to enjoy rugby

Welcome to your new favourite sport.

The game will be showcased at the Rio Olympics for the first time later this year and is likely to be a big hit with those who’ve never been lucky enough to be exposed to the game.

Here’s why it’s so much fun:

1. Amazing tries

This is showbiz, baby.

Sevens is a game all about entertainment and scoring great, great tries. Though we all love the original 15-a-side game, of course, recent Six Nations games have been tough, attritional battles.

In Sevens it’s about scoring tries and some of the offloads are X-rated.

2. Serious Tekkers

Joe Schmidt’s infamous video review session on a Monday morning would not welcome this carry on.  Adam Zaruba’s catch had fans at the Paris Sevens on their feet last week. Ridiculous.

3. Big hits

Though the game is defined by skill and athleticism, there’s no messing around when it comes to tackling.

Georgia Page found herself a viral star when her huge tackle in a women’s tie broke her nose. She didn’t look too pushed.

4. You don’t need to know the rules

A sports fan from any part of the world could sit into a stadium seat in front of a Sevens game and immediately appreciate what was unfolding on the field.

The game is a stripped back version of the 15-person sport, is a lot easier to understand and enjoy because of it.

There’s no need to know your jackal position from your pillar here.

5. Fancy dress

Why go to watch some sport in a team jersey or a nice shirt when you can dress up like a a Ghostbuster or one of the Bananas in Pyjamas? Rugby Sevens has a rich tradition of spectators rocking up to grounds in ridiculous gear.

6. Big names love a go

From Wallabies star Kurtley Beale to NFL player Jarryd Haynes, some of the biggest names in the 15s game and beyond love to show their skills in Sevens.

Carlin Isles has become one of the most recognisable for his ridiculous speed and finishing ability.

7. The action off the pitch

What’s the atmosphere like at a Sevens tournament? Think the darts, Poznan and Ibiza in one stadium.

The party at a Sevens tournament is something special. From Wellington to Hong Kong, Vegas to Dubai, this looks some craic.
