1. #TO THE POLLS: Millions of people are casting their vote in the UK General Election. Polls opened at 7am at around 50,000 polling stations across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
2. #GIVING OUT: Finance Minister Michael Noonan has said that some unemployed people are “allergic to work”. He made the comments at a Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce lunch, according to the Irish Independent.
3. #GIVING BACK: Public service workers are set to gain on average €800 a year, as the government restores pay cuts – spending up to €300 million, according to this morning’s Irish Times.
4. #BIBI’S BACK: Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed a last-minute deal to form a new coalition government in Israel – after winning backing from a right-wing party. He now has a majority of just one.
5. #WATER CHARGES: The Cabinet has approved measures to deduct water charges from the wages and social welfare payments of non-payers. There are also proposals for landlords to withhold deposits until proof of payment is provided.
6. CRYPTOSPORIDIUM: While we’re on the subject, there’s a boil water notice in effect since last night, in Enda Kenny’s own constituency.
7. DIRECT PROVISION: The direct provision system is ‘not fit for purpose’ a report due out this morning from an Oireachtas committee has found, according to RTÉ.
8. #STABBINGS: Six stabbings in Irish prisons over six weeks: the Prison Officers Association is drawing attention to the figure, and calling for action from the justice minister, at its annual conference.
9. #THE OUTLOOK Bright or sunny spells and scattered showers today. Highs of 10 to 13 degrees.
