GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here’s what you need to know as you kick off your Friday.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine things you need to know as you begin your day.

1. #AUSTRALIA: An Irish emigrant who was injured in a hammer attack at a boarding house in Melbourne last month has died from his injuries. David Greene, 30, was surrounded by his family and friends as he passed away in the city’s Alfred Hospital. The second man, 28-year-old David Byas, has left hospital.

2. #HEALTH: Health minister James Reilly says he was not forced into a U-turn over cuts to personal assistant hours – saying the cuts that had been reported were “never going to happen”. Reilly told last night’s Prime Time that he had instructed the HSE to make cuts to personal assistant hours only as a last resort.

3. #CONSULTANTS: That’s not the only Health-related news today, however. The Department of Health has defended an arrangement to pay €131,000 plus VAT to a team of six consultants for just six weeks’ advisory work. The six consultants will receive almost €22,000 each for advising on primary care delivery.

4. #US 2012: Barack Obama has formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for November’s presidential election – saying the election asks voters to choose between two different models and visions from America. “Yes, our path is harder — but it leads to a better place,” the president said on the final night of the party’s national convention.

5. #FUEL: A survey by the National Consumer Agency has revealed that shopping around for home heating oil can save consumers around €30 to €40 – while pointing out that fuel is up to 10 per cent more expensive in some parts of the country than others.

6. #FOOD: Academics have suggested that around one in every 200 people could have little control in managing their weight – because they are actually addicted to food. A ‘small proportion of people with binge-eating disorders’, PA reports, exhibit symptoms which could be deemed an ‘addiction’.

7. #JOBSWATCH: Business advisory firm Deloitte has announced plans to hire 280 people at its Irish operations. The firm is seeking staff in Dublin, Cork and Limerick in audit, tax and finance areas.

8. #PARALYMPICS: Ireland’s Jason Smyth is a mere 22 seconds away from emulating the landmark feat of Usain Bolt – by completing the 100m and 200m sprint double for the second time at the Paralympic games. Smyth runs in his 200m final this evening – but he’s not the only Irish person in action today, as TheScore.ie will tell you.

9. #COMEDY: Surely you can’t be serious? Well, we are – and don’t call us Shirley. Spoof disaster film Airplane has been named the funniest film ever made, by subscription service Lovefilm. The company ranked movies by the number of laughs they generate to produce a laughs-per-minute score – in which the 1980 satire beats The Hangover into second place.
