1. #BUGGING: The Garda Ombudsman has said it is happy with the Cooke report into the alleged bugging of its office which found that GSOC “acted in good faith”. The report found that there was no evidence that GSOC was bugged by gardaí.

2. #MOTHER AND BABY HOMES: The major inquiry into mother and baby homes, which will look at issues including death rates, forced adoptions, vaccine trials, and care of the residents,  has been given a cautious welcome.

3. #SIGNING OFF: New research from the ESRI has shown that in cases where people would be better off financially claiming social welfare than taking a job, the vast majority of people choose to work.

4. #CHILD ABUSE: A father offered to abuse his daughter for an online audience before he was arrested by gardaí – that’s just one of the cases highlighted in the latest report by the Child Care Law Reporting Project, which looks at childcare proceedings in court. 

5. #CRASH (ALMOST): Two planes only just avoided a mid-air crash over Ireland West Airport at Knock last year after coming within a few hundred metres of each other, an investigation has found.

6. #GONEZO: In a shock result in the US, Eric Cantor, one of the highest-ranking Republican politicians in the country, has lost his seat to a relatively unknown Tea Party candidate who ran on immigration issues.

7. #GET TALKING: Both sides in the Aer Lingus dispute are to sit down at the Labour Court this morning in a bid to settle the long-running dispute over rosters which has already seen one 24-hour strike in recent weeks.

8. #LONDON: Two teenagers have died after falling from a sixth floor balcony while attending at a party in south London. Police said they are treating the deaths as a tragic accident.

9. #RIP: Sad news: Eric Hill, the children’s author who created Spot the Dog, has died at the age of 86 at his home in California.
