GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Catch up as you wake up and remember that it’s the weekend!

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine stories you need to know as you kick off your day.

1. #DECISION: A clinically dead pregnant woman’s life support is expected to be turned off today following yesterday’s High Court ruling. In her analysis of the case this morning Sinead O’Carroll writes that while this was not an abortion case all roads lead to the controversial 8th Amendment.

2. #NOT YES MEN: Enda Kenny has defended his leadership of Fine Gael and insisted he can handle criticism from backbenchers.

3. #STATE PAPERS: Documents released under the 30-year rule show that former British prime minsiter Margaret Thatcher held a particularly robust meeting with Garret Fitzgerald where she remarked “the Irish don’t like to move” but “they all seem terribly happy to move to Britain”. All our 1984 State Papers coverage is here.

4. #STATE PAPERS: Documents from 30 years ago also reveal that former finance minister Alan Dukes warned of Ireland needing an international bailout more than a quarter of a century before the Troika arrived in 2010, according to the Irish Times.

5. #JOBBRIDGE: Fewer people than the government expected have taken up JobBridge internships in 2014. While 5,000 people were expected to take up placements only 2,939 had done so at the end of November.

6. #TAXIS: There has been a rise in complaints against taxi drivers in 2014, according to the Irish Daily Mail with more than 760 passengers filing complaints related to overcharging, receipts and the state of some cars.

7. #NOT BOTHERED: Irish people would not be bothered by an openly gay taoiseach, the government chief whip Paul Kehoe has told the Irish Examiner.

8. #THE INTERVIEW: The controversy rumbles on as North Korea has condemned US president Barack Obama over the release of the film which has been the subject of mixed reviews.

9. #WINTER SALES: There’s plenty of comment in this morning’s papers around the start of the winter sales yesterday. Here’s our own Daragh Brophy’s report on the scenes in Dublin while these pictures sum-up the madness of it all.
