GOOD MORNING

The 9 at 9 Good morning! Here are nine things to know before you start your day…

EACH DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you should know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #ABORTION: The Government has published legislation which will allow for terminations in specific circumstances. The Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013 includes some changes from the heads outlined in April. The provision that an institution could not use conscientious objection has been removed.

2. #DROWNING: A community in Waterford mourns the loss of three brothers today following a devastating drowning incident near Tramore Bay yesterday evening. The men have been named as Paul, Kenny and Shane Bulger, all in their 40s.

3. #SAVITA: The HSE’s report into the death of Savita Halappanavar will be published this afternoon. According to RTÉ News, the clinical review found that a key factor in the tragedy was “inadequate assessment and monitoring”. Minister James Reilly described the report as straight and hard-hitting but said it is not possible to know if the published abortion legislation would have saved the Galway woman’s life.

4. #JOBS: The Taoiseach will travel to Cork this morning for a major jobs announcement. IT company EMC is expected to reveal up to 200 new positions at its Ovens plant.

5. #GREECE: Another 24-hour general strike will bring Greece to a standstill today. Public workers have staged the walkout to protest against the government’s decision to take the national broadcaster (the country’s version of RTÉ) off air.

6. #TAX: Britain’s spending watchdog has criticised Google, accusing the multinational of avoiding corporation tax by using a “deeply unconvincing” argument that its sales to UK clients take place in Ireland.

7. #WAGS: Embattled chairman of the Public Accounts Committee John McGuinness will make a statement about the recent controversy over travel expenses for his wife ahead of the committee’s weekly meeting at 10am today.

8. #MENTAL HEALTH: More than 100 children were admitted to adult psychiatric units last year despite a recent amendment to the Mental Health Act which explicitly prohibits the practice. The Mental Health Commission has described the situation as “unsatisfactory”.

9. #FLOODING: Yes, flooding. And yes, it is the 13th day of June. Met Éireann has warned that spot flooding could be seen today as overcast and wet conditions continue. The heavy rain is due to clear for a spell this morning but heavy showers are expected to return later, particularly in the northern half of the country. Sorry.
