1. #ULSTER BANK: Senior Ulster Bank officials are to face questioning by the Oireachtas finance committee over the bank’s ongoing efforts to deal with serious customer issues. Meanwhile, some of the bank’s customers are receiving warning letters about missed direct debits and loan payments as a result of the problems.
2. #WE’RE BACK: The NTMA is to auction €500 million of short-term government debt this morning in what is being seen as a key test of the markets for Irish debt. The auction is set to close at 10.30am.
3. #SKULL: DNA tests are being carried out on a human skull which was found in the Dublin Mountains yesterday in an effort to identify it.
4. #LIBYA: Amnesty International says it has uncovered evidence of electric shocks and violent beatings of prisoners in Libya. The organisation says that up to 20 prisoners have may been tortured to death over the past 11 months, suggesting that Libyan militias are repeating the same abuses carried out under Gaddafi’s regime.
5. #CHILDREN: Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald is formally launching a new pilot project today which aims to ensure that separated children in the asylum process are given the support of a responsible and trusted adult to help them through the asylum process and to adapt to life in their new community.
6. #FLIGHT 447: The final report of the French aviation authority into a plane crash which killed 228 people, including three young Irish doctors, in 2009 is due to be published today.
7. #FUKUSHIMA: A Japanese parliamentary panel report on the country’s Fukushima nuclear crisis as a “profoundly man-made disaster” and blamed both the government and the nuclear plant operator for serious deficiencies in the response to the crisis.
8. #GHOST ESTATES: Minister for Housing Jan O’Sullivan has told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland that some of the country’s unfinished ghost estates will have to be demolished if it is not viable to complete them. She says that her department, NAMA and developers are still engaging in completing ghost estates and making as many of them “as possible” viable for people to live in them.
