A good day gets better for McDowell, as he beats Garcia in Spain

Graeme McDowell is into the last four of the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

GRAEME McDOWELL DEFEATED Sergio Garcia to book a semi-final with Rafael Cabrera-Bello at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

McDowell and Spaniard Garcia could not be separated over 18 holes of their quarter-final at Finca Cortesin on Saturday, with the Northern Irishman eventually triumphing on the first playoff hole.

Cabrera-Bello meanwhile overcame fellow Spaniard Alvaro Quiros 3&1 to reach the last four of the European Tour event near Marbella.

Scotsman Paul Lawrie brushed aside two-time major champion Retief Goosen, defeating the South African 6&5.

He will meet Nicolas Colsaerts in the semi-finals following the Belgian’s 4&3 win over American Brandt Snedeker.

Earlier in the day, McDowell saw off Englishman Richard Finch 3&2 in the round of 16, while Cabrera-Bello edged Swede Robert Karlsson by one hole.

Colsaerts staged a minor upset when he accounted for Englishman Justin Rose 4&3, and Lawrie registered a heavy 5&4 win against Dane Thomas Bjorn.

Defending champion Ian Poulter of England bowed out following a 4&3 defeat to Quiros in the round of 16.
