Adam Byrne hamstrung for Ospreys, as Kearney undergoes surgery again

The fullback has undergone an operation on his bicep.

LEINSTER HOPE TO see Adam Byrne fit again in time for their Champions Cup semi-final against Clermont in Lyon.

The Kildare man limped off midway through the first half of the 32 – 17 win over Wasps and was replaced by Fergus McFadden.

Leinster’s medical team reported today that the injury is a ‘low -grade’ hamstring strain. He will miss out on this weekend’s trip to face the Ospreys, but is expected back in training next week.

Meanwhile, fullback Rob Kearney has undergone surgery on a bicep injury, having only recently had a minor procedure on his knee.

The Ireland international damaged his bicep tendon during the Six Nations, missing the final-round win over England, and underwent an operation last Wednesday to remedy the issue.

Leinster say the 31-year-old will be out for “a number of weeks” as he recovers.

Also injured over the weekend was out-half Cathal Marsh, who pulled up with a quad strain in the warm-up before Leinster A’s win over Ulster on Friday. He is expected to miss up to three weeks.

Sean Cronin did feature against the Ravens, making his comeback from the hamstring injury that kept him out of the Six Nations. He is joined on the available list for the weekend’s Pro12 clash by Rhys Ruddock and Dave Kearney.

Jonathan Sexton is in the same bracket after finishing the clash with Wasps despite being treated for a shoulder injury. Post-match, head coach Leo Cullen highlighted the manner in which his out-half was again targeted by opposition defenders before expressing a hope that the late hit would be clarified by officials.

“It’s just on the edge. It’s a difficult one for referees because I don’t know exactly what is their definition of late hits. It’s part and parcel of the game as well,” said Cullen.

“Johnny is getting bangs, he is shipping bangs because he is getting hit just as he has passed the ball. That’s where he is taking a lot of the hits.”
