Flying home for Christmas? There will be strikes at some UK airports

Unite members are going on strike on December 23.

AIRPORTS IN THE United Kingdom are facing the prospect of a pre-Christmas strike after a union voted to take industrial action in a dispute over pay.

The action is expected to mainly affect Heathrow airport, but also Manchester and Gatwick.

Workers with Unite voted to take the action over cuts imposed by dnata which sees supervisors receive a 4.5% reduction in pay – double what is being imposed on other staff.

However, airlines and airports has said that either extra staff will be put on, or the effect will be minor as some do not have a large dnata presence.

The union is calling for the company to engage with them in talks.

Unite has warned that its members include check-in staff, aircraft push back drivers, loaders and HGV drivers.

“Strike action is very much a last resort and our members are mindful of the potential disruption it could cause,” regional officer Kevin Hall said.

The strike is due to begin on 23 December.
