JASON MCGUINNESS SCORED in injury time for the second week in a row as Sligo Rovers left it late to beat UCD 2-1 at the Showgrounds.
McGuinness was the hero on opening weekend when he equalised in the 93rd minute against Shelbourne, and it was the big centre-half who rose highest to head home Lee Lynch’s corner for a stoppage-time winner last night.
Danny North gave Sligo the lead in the 23rd minute with his first league goal for the club, a brilliant chip following Gaynor’s long ball.
It looked as though the hosts would have to settle for a draw when David O’Connor scored from two yards out on the stroke of full time following a goalmouth scramble in which the Students hit the bar twice.
But McGuinness was Sligo’s saviour once again as he headed home in the third minute of stoppage time to give the Bit O’Red their first win of the new season.
In the First Division clasico, Mark Salmon’s goal on the hour mark was the difference as Longford Town beat local rivals Athlone Town 2-1 in Flancare Park.
In Ballybofey, Finn Harps won by the odd goal in seven as they beat Mervue United 4-3.
