Airtricity League wrap: Sligo overcome Limerick, as Dundalk punish Students

Ian Baraclough’s side had to recover from the setback of going a goal down this evening.

DESPITE THE RECENT bad weather, two games went ahead in the Airtricity League this evening, with Sligo and Dundalk securing hard-earned victories.

Sligo triumphed 2-1 against Limerick, while Dundalk beat UCD by the same scoreline.

Ian Baraclough’s side had to overcome the setback of going a goal down, after Craig Curran put the visitors ahead with a well-executed finish.

On the brink of half-time, Sligo responded, with Anthony Elding converting Alan Keane’s cross.

It was a tight second half that looked to be heading for a stalemate, until Jeff Henderson scored from close range with a scrappy finish on 83 minutes, after being set up by Elding.

The game at the Belfied Bowl was similarly closely fought.

The match remained scoreless until the 77th minute, when substitute Tiernan Mulvenna gave Dundalk the lead with a clever chipped finish.

John Dillon then extended his side’s advantage three minutes later, scoring an opportunistic goal after UCD failed to deal with a Dane Massey cross.

However, there was still time for the Students to grab a consolation, with Gareth Matthews scoring a superb free-kick from distance in the dying stages.
