ALAN BROGAN HAS called for the introduction of a ‘tap and go’ in Gaelic Football to speed up the game.
With the Football Review Committee, chaired by Eugene McGee, set to deliver their recommendations soon to the GAA, the Dublin star believes adopting the rule would help to curb the practice of cynical fouling.
Tyrone manager Mickey Harte voiced his opposition to the ‘tap and go’ last month but Brogan is in favour of it.
“I’d be more interested in the rule changes than how the competition is actually structured. I’d like to see the tap and go. I think it would help stop some of the cynical fouling that is going on at the moment and speed up the game.
“Any rules that are in favour of attacking play are worth having a go at. I think some of the games have got quite cynical over the last number of years. I don’t think any team is guilt free in that. Anything that can be done to stop that or help attackers is worthwhile having a look at.”
“I’d be in favour of any rules that can help free, fast, flowing football. As a footballer that’s the way I like to play football. As spectators that’s the kind of football they like to see.”
Brogan disagrees with the proposal mooted by the likes of Down attacker Benny Coulter to change the game to 13-a-side and insists he still enjoys the sport.
“I wouldn’t say I don’t enjoy it. There’s the whole tactical element of it which can be quite interesting. A team as fit and as talented as Donegal showed that if you buy into a game plan you have a chance of winning. If you get it tactically right you have a chance of beating a team that is better than you.
“So from that point of view it is quite interesting. You have to be smart and play the game as you see it. Smart, tactical teams are the only teams that win All-Ireland’s. I don’t know about 13-a-side. Stopping the cynical fouling would be more beneficial.”
