Cork keeper Alan Quirke has retired from inter-county football

Quirke, 37, becomes the fourth senior player to call it quits in recent days.

CORK HAVE LOST another veteran to retirement with the news that Alan Quirke is hanging up his boots.

The long-serving football keeper, who turned 37 last month, revealed that he made up his mind before the start of the 2013 season.

“I thought about it long and hard while I was in the Lebanon on Army duty and I knew coming back last May that it was my last season one way or the other,” Quirke told Wednesday’s Irish Examiner.

He becomes the fourth senior player to retire in recent days following announcements by Paudie Kissane, Graham Canty and Pearse O’Neill.

The Cork County Board thanked Quirke for his long service and dedication since making his debut in 1999.

In 14 years he won four National Football Leagues, six Munster Championships and an All-Ireland title in 2010.
