Match-fixing scandal: Italian defender gets 22-month ban for deliberate own-goal

Andrea Masiello admitted to putting the ball into this own net on purpose while playing for Bari in 2011.

FORMER BARI FOOTBALLER Andrea Masiello and two associates were on Wednesday handed suspended prison terms by a Bari court for their role in fixing several Serie A matches.

Masiello, a defender, hit the headlines at the end of the 2011 season when it was revealed he had accepted cash to deflect the ball into his own net in a derby against Lecce.

Bari had already been virtually relegated but the goal secured a victory for Lecce which assured their Serie A survival.

On Wednesday the investigating magistrate of Bari’s high court, Michele Parisi, sentenced Masiello to a year and 10 months for “criminal association and sporting fraud”, according to ANSA.

Two associates, Gianni Carella and Fabio Giacobbe, were sentenced to one year and five months respectively. All three sentences were suspended.

Parisi said four matches — Palermo v Bari, Bari v Sampdoria, Bari v Lecce and Bologna v Bari were concerned by the investigation.
