Andros Townsend charged over alleged breach of betting rules

The Spurs midfielder has been forced to pull out of the U-21 European Championships too.

THE ENGLISH FOOTBALL Association have charged Tottenham winger Andros Townsend over alleged breaches of its rules regarding betting.

The 21-year-old, who spent the latter half of the 2012-13 Premier League campaign on loan at QPR, has been charged over “a number” of offences. He has subsequently withdrawn from Stuart Pearce’s England Under-21 squad for the European Championships, to be replaced by Nathan Redmond.

“The FA has announced it has charged Andros Townsend in relation to alleged breaches of its rules governing misconduct and betting,” a statement from the FA read. “Townsend will receive the full support of The FA and Tottenham Hotspur FC in seeking rehabilitation whilst responding to the allegations.”

Townsend made 12 top-flight appearances for Harry Redknapp’s side last term, scoring two goals.
