Poll: We asked you for your best football moments... This is what you told us

Now you decide who wins a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Anfield

A FEW WEEKS ago we told you about an incredible prize we are giving away, with thanks to Carlsberg.

Next month one of our readers and a friend will get the full VIP treatment at Liverpool’s penultimate home Premier League game of the season against QPR.

Then, the following day, they’ll pull on the famous red kit and line out at Anfield for a full-on game with Liverpool club icons.

As part of the #jointhegreats campaign, we asked you to tell us about that special football moment in your life. Lots of you had your say and now it’s time to hand out the jersey.

Check out our top entries and cast your important vote at the bottom to decide who gets to shoot into the Kop end next month and realise their dreams.

1.  I won’t forget the anniversary – Adrian Ormsby

The Ataturk stadium was in the middle of nowhere somewhere more suitable for nuclear testing. Note the space ship style stadium in the bottom left background.

That’s me in yellow jersey and of course Carlsberg cap proudly worn.

I think this is what they mean by invasion:

The whole night was probably my “best soccer moment”. Probably?

So as I come to the 10-year anniversary of this incredible experience so much has happened since and nothing has come close. So how do I keep this incredible memory alive? Well, I get married in six weeks on 25 May, 10 years to the memorial day….but SSSHHHH don’t tell my lovely finance ;-)

At least I won’t forget the anniversary!

2. ‘The respect they had for him was incredible’ — Eric Higgins

“All my life growing up, all I ever wanted to do was play football. From the moment I learned to kick a ball, I wanted to grow up and play professionally. I was good, but not good enough to play at the highest level… I did what most normal people did — went to college, got an education, got a job and got by.

That was my life for the last few years, just working away, getting by. Until last year, when I made a decision to try and get back into doing what I love, and getting into football in some shape or form. So I started coaching, got my badges with the FAI, and I am still on the path to completing those. I decided that if I was going to make a real go of this, and be serious about coaching for a living, then I would need to get experience with professional clubs. Which brings me to my best football moment!

I wrote to a number of Premier League clubs, requesting to do some coaching work experience. Liverpool FC were good enough to allow me to travel over and spend a week with them, shadowing their coaches and learning from them. Then came the moment. I was standing watching a session at their academy in Kirkby. An old man came over and started chatting away to me – shooting the breeze about where I was from, why I was here, etc. It dawned on me that Id seen this guy before, he was recognisable. It was 70s Liverpool legend Stevie Heighway. We chatted for a bit, then when the Liverpool players spotted Stevie, they instantly all stopped what they were doing, and came over to say hello and shake his hand.

The respect they had for him was incredible. And he showed the same respect back to them. When they went back into training, he told me about each player, he knew them all, could tell me their names, positions, strengths, weaknesses. I think back to that moment of meeting Stevie, and I think the reason it stood out to me so much was because I realised just what a fantastic club Liverpool was and is. The young guys look up to those who have been and gone, the old guys look up and admire the talent coming through who are the future of the club. One particular player who shook Stevie’s hand was Jordan Rossiter — this guy is the next Steven Gerrard, and it was amazing to see the two guys meet and relate to each other and to be there to witness it all.

That is my best football moment. An incredible experience and one I will never forget.”

3. ‘When we thought we won the league’ - Geoff Roche

This does not slip, said Stevie G after the 3-2 win over Man City last year. It did after Gerrard’s error against Chelsea some time later and the crucial draw at Palace but reader Geoff Roche didn’t know that at the time he shot this video at a bouncing Anfield. Amazing.

4.  Sinead Mooney is married to a Liverpool fanatic

I met Simon (Bailey) through a supporters club in 2007 and we were friends for a year or so then on the 13 September 2008 we travelled on a club trip to the Liverpool v Manchester United match in Anfield in which Liverpool won 2-1,” writes Reds supporter Sinead.

“I sat beside Simon for that match and we have been inseparable ever since. (He called me his lucky charm……..lol.) Throughout this time I have seen just how important and big a part Liverpool Football Club plays in his life. All of our holidays and personal events all have to be planned around Liverpool Football Club and on occasion we have come to arguing about this but I always give in as I know how much it means to him and the fact that I’m a big Liverpool supporter myself also helps. On the 13 September 2013, five years to the day that we got together we got married and Liverpool was the theme to our wedding.  We walked down the Aisle as husband and wife to the Liverpool Anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The tables we’re named after various Liverpool Legends and landmarks, Simon and the grooms man all wore Liverpool cuff links and our wedding guest book was a giant Liverpool banner.

5. Chris Kearney

He's been there before, and now Chris Kearney wants to tog out with Liverpool greatness again.

"This was one of the best nights I have ever had in my 32 years of existence (And I am married with two kids)," he writes.

"The picture was taken in 2011 when the Liverpool Legends came to my home town and I played the full 90 mins in goals for the Legends and we won 3-2 to make it even sweeter.
Why do I think that I deserve to win this opportunity again? It's simple: because my best friend and I (who also played in that game) have been Liverpool supporters all our lives and have never been to Anfield to watch a match and to win this would just be the best thing that could ever happen to us (my best friend is also married with four kids)."
