ANTHONY DALY’S APPOINTMENT to new roles in Limerick hurling have been confirmed tonight by the county’s GAA board.

An official statement on the county’s website provided the confirmation that Daly is to become the new Director of Limerick’s underage hurling academy as well coaching the county’s minor hurling side in 2015. The Limerick Leader’s GAA correspondent Jerome O’Connell had first reported the story this afternoon.

The statement read:

“The board are delighted to have appointed one of the most sought after coaches in the country and look forward to his working with and identifying our potential stars of the future.

“Anthony brings a wealth of talent and experience to the role and his appointment reemphasises Limerick GAA’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards in underage hurling development that have been in place since the launch of the Lifting the Treaty blueprint in 2008.”

Daly, who captained Clare to All-Ireland glory in 1995 and 1997, stepped down as Dublin manager in early September following six seasons at the helm.

In an interview with TheScore.ie earlier this month, Daly spoke of how he had helped out Galway’s Ardrahan and Westmeath’s Raharney with coaching sessions since then while also being offered jobs from clubs in Galway, Limerick and Tipperary.

He brings a wealth of experience to his new positions and had previously been involved in Limerick hurling with the LIT Freshers’ hurling side. Daly will work under manager Leo O’Connor – who steered Limerick to the 2011 Munster U21 hurling title – in his new minor role.

Both positions became vacant following the departure of Jerry Wallace, the former Antrim manager and Cork coach. Wallace was recently appointed as manager of 2013 Cork senior hurling champions Midleton, which prompted his departure from the minor setup.

Despite being willing to stay on in the role with the academy, Wallace released a statement last week insisting that he was removed from that position.

Tonight Limerick GAA paid tribute to Wallace.

!The board would like to again thank outgoing Head Coach of the Underage Hurling Academy, Jerry Wallace for his outstanding contribution to the development of Limerick’s next generation of hurlers and wish him every success in his role with his home club of Midleton.”
