AP McCoy will retire from racing at the end of the season

The 19-time champion jockey is leaving the saddle at the end of the season.

THE RACING WORLD was shocked a few minutes ago when AP McCoy announced to C4 that he will retire at the end of the season. McCoy has had a phenomanlly successful career and has won almost every major race possible for a jump jockey.

McCoy has won 19 champion jockey titles – one for every year he has been a professional – which are given to the person who rides the most winners in Britain every year. No other jockey has won more the seven.

He also holds the record for most wins in a season, after riding 289 winners in 2001/02.

“He has been a great ambassador for the sport, nobody can say enough about him,” trainer Paul Nicholls said.

“We are taken aback but it doesn’t surprise me totally because one day you have to make your decision and he has decided it is the right one. Everyone will miss him riding because he has been such a legend. He is still riding as well know as he has ever ridden so it is probably the right time to go out.”

McCoy’s wife Channelle also spoke about her husband’s decision.
