Five men arrested after discovery of suspicious device near border

The men range in age from mid 50s to early 70s.

FIVE MEN IN Louth have been arrested this evening and a suspect device was recovered near the border.

Gardaí said this evening that as part of ongoing investigations into the activities of dissident republicans, they carried out an operation in the Kilcurry area, and arrested the five men ranging in age from mid 50s to early 70s.

A suspect device was recovered and will be examined by the Defence Forces.

The five men are being held at Drogheda and Dundalk Garda Stations.

Commenting on the news, Sinn Féin leader and TD for Louth Gerry Adams said he was concerned at the development.

“If this was an attempt to place a bomb then whoever is responsible should cease their activities,” he said.

“Anyone with an ounce of republican politics or common sense knows that there is a peaceful and democratic way forward.”
