Hard bargain: Bale price tag too much for Perez

The Madrid president is minding the pennies.

REAL MADRID PRESIDENT Florentino Perez has hinted that the club will not meet Tottenham’s valuation of Gareth Bale.

The Liga side have been in pursuit of Bale throughout the close-season, however their advances have so far been rebuffed by Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Levy has placed a €100 million price tag on the Wales international’s head, and that appears to have cooled the Spanish side’s interest.

Were Madrid to meet Tottenham’s valuation, they would break the world record transfer fee paid for a player, eclipsing the €93million they paid for Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United in 2009. However, Perez has admitted that they are unlikely to put together such a package.

“€100 million seems a lot to me, a lot for anyone,” he told ESPN. “We’re talking with lots of people and we will see what happens with all of our negotiations – with this player (Bale) and with others.

“We do not usually talk about other players out of respect for the player, the club and the president, with whom I struck up a good friendship last season during the signing of Luka Modric.

“And if I’m not going to talk about names, I’m not going to talk about money. I’m not going to talk about players or money because I should not and cannot.”

Bale scored 21 goals in 33 Premier League appearances last season and has reportedly requested permission to speak to Real following their bid.

He has been absent for much of Tottenham’s pre-season programme, according to Tottenham due to injury, and it appears unlikely that he will be involved when the club take on Espanyol on Saturday.
