WHEN KATIE TAYLOR climbed out of the ExCel Arena ring an Olympic champion not long after 5pm this evening, one of the first Irishmen to congratulate her was Barry McGuigan.
“She was amazing, it was incredible,” the former world champion told TheScore afterwards in London.
“I never experienced anything like it in my life. I don’t even think it was like that with me. It certainly surpassed any noise that I heard before.
“She is loved, she is remarkable, she is an amazing kid, she has a lovely family. Just everything that could be said about her I repeat, she’s amazing. And I’m so happy for her father who’s committed his life to her.
“He’s a great fella and he’s responsible for the level of skill that she has because he just worked the drills over and over and over again. Amazing, just amazing. It was a very close fight and don’t get me wrong, she drew the first but could have lost it and she had a poor second but the third and fourth rounds were brilliant and that’s what’s won it for her,” the Clones man told Will Downing.
