BBC to scrap The Football League Show - Report

The Saturday night hightlights programme will finish up at the end of the season to slash costs, according to reports.

FANS OF ENGLISH clubs outside the Premier League may soon have to do without watching their team on a Saturday night after it was reported that BBC’s Football League Show is being cancelled.

The popular television programme, which directly follows their flagship Match Of The Day, presents highlights of all the games from the Coca-Cola Championship, League One and League Two during a 75-minute slot and has been running since 2009.

However, BBC are believed to be axing the show at the end of the season in a bid to save costs.

The decision has resulted in worries over the future of MOTD after the British public service broadcaster announced details of cutbacks in October and slashed the sports budget by 15%.

“It is coming to the end of a three-year contract and it will not be renewed,” said a source in The Daily Mirror.

The FLS wasn’t broadcast at its usual slot on Monday and will not return until mid-January because of “budget decisions” according to presenter Manish Bhasin.

Fans of the programme have reacted angrily on Twitter since the reports broke last night and many have blamed the enormous salaries of pundits such as Alan Hansen, who earns €48,000 per episode of MOTD it was revealed in October.
