PASSENGERS ON THEIR way to work in London this morning were puzzled when they were unable to get into their local station after a gang of thieves boarded up the entrance in an attempt to rob cash from the ATM machine.

Police said a group of five people boarded up the train station in Enfield in London between 2am and 4am this morning.

Detective Sergeant Alan Bardsley, investigating, said:

“We are looking for a group of five people in relation to this offence. We believe they attended Enfield Chase station between 2am and 4am on Monday, 15 June, and boarded up the station entrance to avoid being interrupted while they set about attempting to break into the cash machine with power tools.”

The group are also believed to have been at the station the day before, in the early hours of Sunday.

The group got away empty handed, but police said this was a planned attempt to steal cash, causing significant damage to the machine.

In addition, the boarding up of the entrance to the station caused disruption to passengers attempting to travel through the station on Monday morning.

Roger Perkins, from Great Northern, said passengers suffered a “frustrating start” to the week this morning following the break-in at Enfield Chase, a station used by 1.3 million people a year.

None of our trains were able to stop there until 8am but our staff worked hard to reopen the station as quickly as possible.
