THE MAYOR OF Boston has jetted back home after his significant trip to Ireland.

The son of two Irish emigrants from Connemara, he spent 10 days in Ireland meeting locals and business people in an effort to boost business between Boston and the old sod.

“As Mayor of Boston, my job is to go out there and market the city as best as we can,” he said.

When I was here on this trip I tried to talk about tourism and inviting people to Boston and also around business development and making sure they know Boston is open [for business].
I definitely see Ireland as an economy that is moving again, and I think there’s a lot of opportunity not just for Ireland from Boston, but I think there’s a lot of opportunity for Boston from Ireland. I think there’s a fair amount of start-up companies and start-up areas in the country.

This was Walsh’s first overseas trip as mayor of Boston, and he even spoke ‘as Gaeilge’ when he arrived at Shannon airport.

During his trip, he appeared on RTÉ’s Saturday Night Show, and made a trip to Carna, his late father John’s birthplace.

Whether we’ll see a flurry of business between Ireland and Boston remains to be seen.
