Added competition for Arter as Bournemouth spend €27.9m on Colombian international

Jefferson Lerma swaps La Liga for the Premier League.

BOURNEMOUTH HAVE COMPLETED the signing of Colombian international midfielder Jefferson Lerma for a club-record fee.

Subject to international clearance, the 23-year-old joins on a five-year deal from La Liga club Levante for a reported €27.9 million sum.

“I have always loved the Premier League style of football and am very happy to have this opportunity,” said Lerma. “I am looking forward to success and doing important things for this club.”

Lerma played in all four of Colombia’s matches at this summer’s World Cup in Russia, including the penalty-shootout defeat to England. He made 93 appearances in all competitions during his three seasons in Spain.

“It’s no secret that Jefferson has been someone we have chased for a while this summer,” Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe said.

“Jefferson is an extremely talented player and a very good athlete who will bring a different type of play to our midfield. He has a lot of qualities that will be suited to the Premier League and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”

Lerma will add extra depth to a Bournemouth midfield that already includes Ireland international Harry Arter.

Eddie Howe’s side begin their Premier League campaign at home to newly-promoted Cardiff City on Saturday.
