Breast implants scare to be discussed at Leinster House

Irish Medicines Board to give latest news on status of PIP implants with which at least 1,500 Irish women were fitted.

EXPERTS FROM THE Irish Medicines Board are to give “the most up to date information” on the situation with breast implant products to an Oireachtas committee today.

Jerry Buttimer, chairman of the Joint Committee on Health and Children, confirmed that the revelations surrounding the use of industrial-grade silicone in breast implants manufactured by a French company will be discussed. At first it was thought that the affected breast implants from the French company, Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), were only implanted between 2001 and 2010. That was bad enough as 1,500 women were identified as having had PIP implants in Ireland in that time period.

However, on 15 March, the Irish Medicines Board said that the French regulatory authority had suggested that “it is possible that PIP silicone gel breast implants manufactured prior to 2001 may also have contained the unapproved non-medical grade silicone”. Cosmetic surgery clinics here had been notified of the update and they are currently contacting patients who might be affected.

The IMB will be asked by the Committee tomorrow to explain what the best advice is for patients, what there options are and if a central information point had been set up for people to contact. The discussion will be streamed live at 11.30am. Click here and choose Committee Room 2 if you wish to watch.
