Brendan Murphy IS home for the summer but there's no place for him in the Carlow team

The former AFL and Irish International Rules player did not travel to Lebanon.

BRENDAN MURPHY IS at home and playing for his club this summer, but so far there’s no place for him in the Carlow team or panel.

Manager Anthony Rainbow revealed in February that Murphy, a member of the Defence Forces, was on a waiting list for a tour of duty in Lebanon and if selected would probably depart sometime in May.

The big midfielder decided to leave the panel immediately as any injury could jeopardise his chances of travelling.

TheScore.ie can reveal that Murphy was not called up to the tour and he has been playing for his club Rathvilly ‘up to recently’.

Murphy has yet to be called back in to the panel and according to a spokesperson for Carlow GAA, a return seems unlikely.

He didn’t go [to Lebanon]. I don’t know now, I presume he’s out of the county football for the year as he hasn’t been with the panel since January.

“He has been playing club matches up to recently, but the panel has been training since November. Brendan joined it in December and left in January so I don’t expect him to be back in June, regardless of the result at the weekend.”

The Carlow side named to start Sunday’s clash with Meath is much changed from the team which drew with the Royals in 2012, although Daniel St Ledger does remain at centre-back.

Throw-in at Dr Cullen Park is at 3.30pm on Sunday.
