Brian Geary calls time on Limerick hurling career

The experienced Monaleen clubman, who made his Munster championship debut in 1999, has opted out of the inter-county game.

EXPERIENCED LIMERICK HURLER Brian Geary has brought the curtain down on his inter-county career.

Geary, who lined out at centre-forward for John Allen’s side during this year’s championship, lined out 45 times in championship encounters for his county.

He made his debut in the Munster senior championship against Cork in 1999 and had informed manager John Allen of his decision over the weekend, despite earlier this month being named in Allen’s initial 40-man training squad for the 2013 season.

The news of Geary’s retirement was confirmed on Twitter by Limerick county board secretary Mike O’Riordan.

Monaleen clubman Geary burst to prominence with his displays at underage level as he won All-Ireland U21 titles with Limerick in 2000 when they defeated Galway in the final and in 2001 when they defeated Wexford in the decider.

Silverware at senior level eluded Geary but he did line out at centre-back on the Limerick side that lost out in the 2007 All-Ireland final against Kilkenny.

Geary also impressed in football and was corner-back on the Limerick team that fell short against Tyrone in the 2000 All-Ireland final. At club level he won four county senior football titles with Limerick in 2002, 2005, 2010 and 2011.
