Brian Magee set for summer title showdown

The Belfast boxer is next in line for a shot against WBA super-middleweight champion Karoly Balzay.

BELFAST BOXER BRIAN MAGEE expects a shot at WBA super-middleweight champion Karoly Balzay before the end of June.

Magee was in Germany on Saturday night to watch the Hungarian defend his crown with a final-round stoppage against Dimitri Sartison.

As the division’s mandatory challenger, Magee is now entitled to a title fight against Balzay by 30 June.

BBC Sport reports that preliminary discussions between the two camps have already taken place and could be finalised this week.

A neutral venue in Denmark, where Magee defended his WBA interim title with a knockout win against Rudy Markussen in February, is being considered for the fight as is the 36-year-old’s hometown of Belfast.

Magee’s last fight for a full world title came in March 2011 when he was stopped in the 10th round by IBF super-middleweight champion Lucian Bute.
