Irish jockey Brian Toomey stable following 'life-threatening' head injury

The 24-year-old rider remains in intensive care following a racing fall yesterday.

IRISH JOCKEY BRIAN TOOMEY is said to be in a stable condition this morning after suffering a serious head injury.

Toomey was rushed to hospital yesterday following a heavy fall during racing at Perth.

A hospital spokesperson told the Press Association last night that the 24-year-old had sustained a “life-threatening head injury.”

Toomey remains in intensive care in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee where he has been joined by his mother and his sister.

An update from the Injured Jockeys Fund said: “Following his fall at Perth racecourse yesterday, jockey Brian Toomey was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

He remains in intensive care in a stable condition and his mother and sister are both with him. It is unlikely there will a further update for 48 hours.

Toomey was riding race favourite Solway Dandy in the Conditional Jockey’s Handicap Hurdle when he fell three flights from home. Racing was delayed for a half an hour while he was treated and transferred to the nearby hospital.

Champion jockey AP McCoy tweeted: “Thoughts and prayers are with Brian Toomey who had a very serious fall at Perth today lets hope he will be ok.”
