Britton misses out on 5,000m final despite smashing personal best

The Irish runner finished six places away from a qualification spot at Olympic Stadium this morning.

IRELAND’S FIONNUALA BRITTON has not qualified for the 5,000m final this morning despite a terrific performance.

The 27-year-old recorded a new personal best, cutting her previous PB of 15:15.69 down to 15:12.97, to finish tenth in Heat 1 at the Olympic Stadium and then had a nervous wait to find out whether she had done enough.

In Heat 2, however, the sixth to eleventh place runners were faster than Britton meaning she finished 21st overall (six positions short) and will not take part in Friday’s final.

“I don’t think I did anything majorly wrong,” she told RTE Sport after the race. “I suppose I could have finished a couple of places higher.

These races aren’t about time, they’re about getting to finals whether it took a PB or a slow time.”

It spells the end of London 2012 for the Kilcoole runner and brings more disappointment after the 10,000m final on Saturday.
