JOE BROLLY, FORMER Derry footballer and GAA pundit, is recovering in a London hospital after donating a kidney to a fellow coach at the St. Brigid’s club.
The All-Ireland winner donated the kidney to his fellow under-10s coach Shane Finnegan last Wednesday in Guys Hospital in the English capital.
“I’m honoured to have been in the position to help Shane,” Brolly told RTE.
“When I heard that the only possibility of a one was through a live donor I contacted his medical team.
“And of course in my considered opinion it’s all going according to plan – and thankfully the doctors concur.”
The 40-year-old Finnegan said that Brolly’s kindness was “overwhelming and, of course, there are no words to thank him or his family for his wonderful gift.”
Dermot Dowling is the chairman of St. Brigid’s and he said that Brolly’s act “epitomised the kind of man Joe is and the selflessness he displays.”
