Camogie President urges fans to 'show your support'

Aileen Lawlor also highlighted the increased influence of Irish women in sport in recent months.

THE PRESIDENT OF the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor has urged fans to “show your support” by attending Sunday’s All-Ireland triple header in Croke Park.

Speaking at the Captains’ Day photocall at GAA HQ, Lawlor said the occasion was the perfect opportunity to see the country’s finest camogie players in action.

Down and Meath take part in the Premier Junior final at 12pm, while Galway face Derry in the Intermediate tie at 2pm, prior to the Senior final, featuring Wexford and Cork, at 4pm.

She said: “We are one of the largest female sports organisations in the country and I am making a direct appeal to all our members to come to Croke Park on Sunday for three top-class games played by superb athletes and excellent ambassadors for the game of camogie. I am also extending that invite to all involved in Gaelic games and to general sports fans to witness the fastest field sport for women in the world.”

Lawlor added that the considerable success of Irish women at the Olympics and Paralympics served to highlight the increasing influence of female athletes in the country.

“Sunday’s finals are one of the largest female sporting events in the country and given the increased coverage and deserved credit that women in sport, across a variety of disciplines have garnered this year alone, our upcoming games provide another opportunity to fix the spotlight firmly on our female sports stars and showcase their talents to a huge national audience.”

The Senior and Intermediate Finals will be broadcast live on RTÉ The Sunday Game with the Senior game also on RTÉ Radio One Sunday Sport and the Premier Junior final available on RTÉ.ie.
