Mixed fortunes for Irish players as Everton and Hull prevail on spot-kicks

It was a night of drama in the Capital One Cup.

EVERTON EDGED INTO the League Cup quarter-finals with a 4-3 penalty shootout win on Tuesday, having come from behind to draw 1-1 against Norwich City at Goodison Park.

Both goals came in the second half, with Sebastien Bassong’s opener cancelled out by Leon Osman.

The hosts then netted all four of their spot-kicks after extra-time failed to produce a winner, Wes Hoolahan seeing his penalty saved before Nathan Redmond fired over to consign the visitors to defeat.

Gerard Deulofeu, Ross Barkley, Romelu Lukaku and Darron Gibson were the men to hold their nerve from 12 yards for the Toffess.

Meanwhile, a goalless fourth round clash between Hull City and Leicester City burst into life in extra time, before the hosts triumphed 5-4 in the shootout that followed.

After failing to find the breakthrough in regular time, Claudio Ranieri’s Premier League high-flyers took the lead 10 minutes into extra time, when Riyad Mahrez pounced on a loose ball after James Vardy saw his shot parried.

The goal woke up the home side and they responded by scoring their own from a similar move, as Mark Schwarzer pushed Chuba Akpom shot only as far as Abel Hernandez, who had no trouble turning home to make the score 1-1.

With nothing seperating the two sides, it went to penalties, and David Meyler slotted home the decisive final penalty to send Steve Bruce’s men through to the next stages.

Tuesday’s Capital One Cup results:

  • Hull 1-1 Leicester (Hull win 5-4 on penalties)
  • Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Arsenal
  • Stoke 1-1 Chelsea (Stoke win 5-4 on penalties)
