Late Martin Dunne points help Cavan defeat Fermanagh in Ulster SFC clash

The sides clashed in Brewster Park in Enniskillen today.

Cavan 0-13
Fermanagh 0-11

TWO LATE POINTS by Martin Dunnne ensured Cavan enjoyed a successful trip to Enniskillen in today’s Ulster senior football quarter-final clash.

9,352 spectators were present in Brewster Park to see the Breffni County get the better of their near neighbors Fermanagh.

The Breffni County wre seeking to build on their preliminary round success over Armagh and it was their match winner in that game Martin Dunne who produced a vital contribution again here.

The teams were tied at 0-11 apiece when Dunne floated over a glorious left-footed shot from play from the left wing in the closing stages and then tapped over a close-range free.

Cavan had to soak up a late barrage of pressure from Fermanagh before prevailing to ensure they will face Monaghan at the semi-final stage.

The result means Cavan have claimed two successive victories in the Ulster senior championship for the first time since 2001 as Terry Hyland’s side are starting to build on the promise the county has showed at U21 level.

Half-Time

Cavan lead by 0-7 to 0-3 at the break. The opening period was an extremely poor affair with Cavan lead by 0-3 to 0-0 after 6 minutes – with Niall McDermott impressing – but there was then no score chalked up for 17 minutes.

Cian Mackey, who was magnificent throughout for Cavan, fired over a point to break the impasse but it was not until the 25th minute that Fermanagh finally got off the mark courtesy of Ryan Jones.

The Erne County built on that to cut the gap to 0-5 to 0-3 yet Eugene Keating banged over a pair of brilliant scores before the interval to stretch Cavan’s lead.

The standards improved in the second-half but Cavan continued to dicate matters as substitute Martin Reilly’s point sent them in front by 0-9 to 0-6.

However Fermanagh fought back with substitutes Daniel Kille and Tomas Corrigan, who shared 0-6 between them, making a significant impact as Peter Canavan’s side drew level at 0-11 apiece.

And it needed Dunne’s late intervention to swing the advantage towards Cavan by the finish.
