ULSTER WILL LOSE the services of 16-time capped All Black Charles Piutau at the end of next season after it was announced he has signed a two-year contract with Bristol.
The 25-year-old will join the English club ahead of the 2018/19 season in a deal described as one of ‘the biggest coups’ in Bristol’s history.
Piutau’s contract at Ulster expires at the end of the forthcoming Guinness Pro14 campaign and the northern province have been unable to renew the terms of his original two-year deal.
Instead, the utility back, who was named the Pro12 Players’ Player of the Year during his debut season at Kingspan Stadium, will link up with Pat Lam at Bristol, who already have Ian Madigan, Jason Harris Wright and Dan Tuohy on their books.
Piutau will also join his older brother, Siale, at Ashton Gate after the 31-year-old Tonga captain moved to the Championship outfit from Wasps in December of last year.
“One of our key focuses is about the journey that Bristol Rugby are on – Charles’ signing for the 2018/19 season demonstrates that we have a long-term plan and structure in place,” Lam said, with Bristol hoping Piutau will join the club ahead of a return to the Premiership.
“We’re thrilled to have an individual of his immense quality and experience to add to our ranks. As somebody who has worked with Charles previously, I know what an influential player he is on and off the field.
“It’s not just his ability to play fullback, wing and centre, all at international standard, but it’s also his willingness to help and mentor others which will be a big boost for our young English players coming through.
“Charles is excited by our vision of ‘inspiring our community through rugby success.’ His determination and attitude to improve as a player and person are exactly the sort of world class characteristics we want in every player who pulls on the Bristol jersey.”
Piutau made 23 appearances for Ulster last season, scoring nine tries, as he made a colossal impact for Les Kiss’ side.
Before moving to Belfast, Piutau — who can play anywhere from 12 to 15 — was nominated for Aviva Premiership Player of the Season during a short stint with Wasps in 2016.
He said by sorting his playing future as early as possible, it allows him to concentrate fully on the upcoming season with Ulster.
“It was a very hard decision as I have really enjoyed my first year at Ulster,” Piutau said.
“The welcome that I had and the way I have been looked after has been the best of any club I’ve been at. The management and players really made me feel part of the family and that will make it extremely hard to leave when the time comes.
“The biggest consideration in my decision to join Bristol is the opportunity to play with my brother Siale, as he approaches the end of his career. It will also be great to work with Steven Luatua and Pat Lam again.”
