One in five parents to take children out of school early for holidays

The average primary school pupil misses 11 out of 183 days of a school year.

AS WE MOVE into the school summer holiday season, research has shown that 20 per cent of parents plan to take their children out of school before the term ends this year.

They’ll be doing this to save money on holiday costs according to the survey by lastminute.com. Figures from the National Educational Welfare Board in October revealed that the average primary school pupil misses 11 out of 183 days of a school year, rising to 13 at post-primary level.

Commenting on the results of the survey, Mark Maddock, MD of the site in the UK and Ireland said that as budgets tighten, there are many tips to keep holiday costs under control without impacting on kids’ school attendence.

“For example travelers can make considerable savings by booking on a certain day or being flexible about the day of the week they travel,” he said.

Bookings put on hold by business customers on a Friday night are released on Saturday morning so this is the best time to browse and buy, the site advised. The best day to travel depends on the route but if you’re heading to the US, many airlines charge a weekend supplement so travelling on a weekday is probably best.
