The number of homeless children is still rising

There were 911 children in homeless accommodation in one week last week.

NEW FIGURES SHOW the number of families and children in emergency accommodation is continuing to rise.

A total of 911 children from 411 families were housed in Dublin between the 23 and 20 March, according to the Dublin Region Homeless Executive.

The agency conducts a monthly survey of the numbers of families on the third week of each month.

After a slight dip in the figures in December, the number of children in emergency accommodation has risen since June 2014, up from 567.

The number of families has risen since a dip of 2 in October.

The council’s homeless executive is facing “an unprecedented demand” for services, a spokesperson said.

“This is primarily as a result of people losing their accommodation in the private rented sector,” they added.

“Local authority staff are working on a daily basis to ensure that families who are at risk of imminent homeless can be accommodated and can avoid the experience of sleeping rough,” while also working with these who are at risk of losing their accommodation.

Anyone who believes they are at risk can contact the council’s Tenancy Protection Service.
