The Austrian photographer looks at how children view themselves and what the future holds for them.

It was an excuse for them to dress up in the most fantastical costumes they could imagine, and the results are incredibly striking.

Peschek photographed German and Austrian children between the ages of four and 10, asking them to use their imagination and picture what they want to be.

There weren’t any Elsas from Frozen – instead, there were imaginary characters that showed different sides to these kids.

The results are insightful, weird, strange, and both innocent and dark. Some of the children look like imaginary characters from fairytales; some appear menacing; others look wistful.

Peschek was the winner of Portfolio 14, which meant she would get to hold a solo exhibition in this year’s Photo Ireland festival.

Christiane Peschek’s 13 Kinder will be on show at the Copper House Gallery in Dublin from 4 – 31 July, as part of the Photo Ireland Festival.
