Driver attempts to run over prison officers as they leave Cloverhill

The car struck a bollard and none of the prison staff were injured.

A DRIVER VEERED off the road and attempted to hit a group of prison officers as they left Cloverhill Prison in Dublin on Thursday evening.

TheJournal.ie understands the incident occurred at 7.45pm Thursday, when around ten members of staff from the prison were leaving work.

The group were walking to the staff car park when a car suddenly increased its speed, did a handbrake turn and headed straight for them. A witness said the car hit a bollard, narrowly missing the prison officers. “At the speed the car hit the bollard, it would have killed anyone it hit instantly,” they said.

A garda spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that the occupant of the car also “shouted abuse” at them.

After hitting the bollard, they reversed the car and continued down Cloverhill Road. The incident was immediately reported to gardaí and officers at Ronanstown Garda Station are investigating.
