GAA move to play all club championship fixtures in the same calendar year

The changes may not be implemented until 2016.

FOLLOWING A MEETING of Central Council today, it was decided, in principle, that the GAA would accept the Football Review Committee’s (FRC) recommendation that all club championship competitions should be completed in the same calendar year.

A special group will be established by the GAA to examine how the recommendation can best be implemented and, if approved, the move would be voted on at Congress in 2015 with the new timetable in operation from 2016.

While no further details have been released, the FRC have recommended the majority of club championship activity take place in a period between mid-April and early August, with provincial finals taking place in November and the All-Ireland club finals the following month.

At today’s meeting it was also recommended that the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) should have the overall responsibility for all fixtures at national, provincial, county, club, schools and third level.

The Inter-provincial Football Championship will also be relaunched but proposals to revamp the provincial football championships into groups of eight and to abolish the semi-finals in the Allianz Football league Division One were turned down.
