Detectives appeal for info on 1996 murder of sex worker in Dublin

Gardaí believe people may have information relevant to their investigations.

DETECTIVES INVESTIGATING THE death of a woman 18 years ago in Dublin have issued a renewed appeal for information.

Belinda Pereira, a Sri Lankan-born sex worker, was found dead with severe head injuries on 29 December 1996 during a brief visit to Ireland.

The 26-year-old had been staying in an apartment at Mellor’s Court in Liffey Street, Dublin 1.

She planned to return to the United Kingdom on New Year’s Day.

Investigating detectives from Store Street Garda Station have made several appeals over the past two decades, with hundreds of statements and a large amount of forensic evidence taken.

They believe there are people with details that could assist in their investigation and bring closure to the family of the deceased.

“The person, or persons, who killed Belinda and who assisted in this murder have most likely spoken to people about what happened, perhaps expressing sorrow and regret at having left a young woman in the way that they did,” a garda spokesperson said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Incident Room at Store Street Garda Station on 01 6668000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
