Uruguay's Álvaro Pereira plays on after serious knock to the head

There was outcry after the São Paulo FC left back overruled the team doctor.

THE SECOND HALF of Uruguay’s clash with England in Group D of the World Cup saw a worrying incident, as Álvaro Pereira returned to play despite being knocked unconscious.

São Paulo FC left back Pereira took a heavy knock to the head as he slid in on Raheem Sterling and lay motionless on the Arena Corinthians turf after the blow. With the team doctor signalling that the Uruguayan should be substituted off, the player himself apparently overruled the decision.

Rugby is currently in the midst of a major discussion around the issue of concussion, while the NFL has serious issues in the area too. Football may be following suit if incidents like this one are repeated.
