2015 Gold Cup winner loses fitness battle to make this year's race

Coneygree’s injury issues have failed to clear up.

FORMER CHELTENHAM GOLD Cup winner Coneygree has been ruled out of this year’s race due to injury.

The injury-plagued nine-year-old has only had two runs since winning the prestigious crown as a novice under Nico De Boinville in 2015.

Mark and Sara Bradstock’s stable star’s last run was a second-place finish in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November, his first defeat over fences, but injury kept the bay gelding out of the King George at Kempton on St Stephen’s Day.

Those “niggling” injury issues have since failed to clear up which has led to the Bradstocks deciding to withdraw Coneygree from this year’s Gold Cup on St Patrick’s Day.

Coneygree had been widely considered a 12/1 shot for this year’s edition of the race, in a similar bracket to the likes of reigning champion Don Cossack (10/1), Djakadam (14/1), Outlander (14/1) and Cue Card (16/1).

Colin Tizzard’s Thistlecrack is still the clear antepost favourite in and around even money, ahead of stablemate Native River (6/1).
