Comfortable win keeps Cork City on track for a third consecutive FAI Cup

The holders were too strong for Maynooth University Town this evening at Turner’s Cross.

IT WAS A straightforward win in the end for FAI Cup holders Cork City as they eased past Maynooth University Town on Leeside this evening.

While it took until just before the half-hour for City to take the lead through Aaron Barry’s header from Barry McNamee’s corner, from there they were comfortable and only for Maynooth goalkeeper David Sterio, the lead would have been greater at half-time as he denied McNamee twice and Gearóid Morrissey.

Eleven minutes into the second half, Kieran Sadlier scored the second for the Rebel Army, a low shot beyond Sterio after a one-two with Josh O’Hanlon.

FAI Intermediate Cup holders Maynooth might have pulled one back after that, but Darragh Reynor’s header from Eoin McDermott’s cross was straight at Peter Cherrie.

On 63, City had a third, Josh O’Hanlon converting a penalty for which he himself had been fouled.

In the closing stages they had a fourth as Ronan Coughlan, scorer of two in the previous round against Home Farm, met sub Ronan Hurley’s cross at the near post.

CORK CITY: Peter Cherrie; Conor McCarthy, Alan Bennett (Ronan Hurley, 67), Aaron Barry, John Dunleavy; Pierce Phillips, Gearóid Morrissey; Josh O’Hanlon, Barry McNamee (Alec Byrne, 68), Kieran Sadlier (Shane Daly-Bütz, 64); Ronan Coughlan.

MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY TOWN: David Sterio; Shane Harte, Conor Dunne, Conor Mooney, Gary Daly; Daniel Burke, Darragh Gannon (Conor Foley, 60), Mark Colgan (Gavin Kinsella, 82), Cillian Duffy; Darragh Reynor; Eoin McDermott (Eoin Donnellan, 67).

Referee: Seán Grant (Wexford)
