PEADAR HEALY’S CORK opened the defence of their McGrath Cup title with a massive 16-point victory over Tipperary in Templetuohy this evening.
The Rebels were too good as Dublin-based Niall Coakley bagged 2-3 and sub Kevin Davis landed six points.
It was an accomplished display from Cork as Tipp slumped to a second big defeat in four days, following last Sunday’s hammering against a Kerry U21 selection in Tralee.
Coakley, the former Carrigaline player now based with St Judes in the capital, scored three points in the recent Dubs Stars annual challenge.
And he looked good in Cork colours this evening – netting in both halves.
Coakley’s 22nd-minute goal helped Cork lead by 1-12 to 1-4 at half-time. They were 11 points clear before Alan Moloney netted in stoppage time at the end of the first half for the hosts.
To their credit, Tipp did make a fight of it in the second half and had the deficit down to six points before Cork scored 1-7 without reply in the closing minutes.
Coakley’s second goal, ten minutes from time, put the end result beyond any doubt but boss Healy will be concerned by injuries that forced Kevin O’Driscoll and debutant Cian Dorgan off early.
Tipp had good displays from Liam Boland and Liam McGrath, the 2011 All-Ireland minor winning skipper, up front but they fell to a second heavy loss in four days.
And Robbie Kiely, black-carded against Mayo in last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, suffered a similar fate with 11 minutes left.
The result means Cork’s game against Kerry next Sunday in Mallow will decided who advances from Group A to the McGrath Cup final.
Meanwhile in Group B tonight, Limerick won in their first outing of the season as they defeated Clare by four points at St Patrick’s GAA club.
The 2-13 to 2-9 victory came against a Clare team who saw off Waterford last Sunday and means that if Limerick are successful against the Deise next Sunday in Lemybrien, they will seal a final place.
Seamus O’Carroll and Darragh Treacy netted for the winners tonight, who were 1-5 to 0-7 ahead at the interval and in front 2-7 to 0-7 with 15 minutes remaining.
Clare grabbed two goals in the closing stages courtesy of Eoin Cleary and Cian O’Dea but Limerick held on to take the spoils.
